Why World Diabetes Day Matters!

Every year on November 14, World Diabetes Day raises awareness of the global impact of diabetes - a condition that affects more than 500 million people worldwide. We see patients at the clinic who have diabetes, where we help them take proactive steps to stay mobile and comfortable.

While the focus often falls on blood sugar and diet, there’s another side of diabetes that doesn’t get enough attention: its effect on your muscles, joints, and overall mobility.

This year’s theme encourages taking action for better health and that includes understanding how to care for your whole body, not just your blood sugar.

Did you know - our Osteopath, Gordon is a type 1 diabetic, so has a personal special interest in World Diabetes Day!

The Hidden Connection: Diabetes and Musculoskeletal Problems

High blood sugar levels over time can affect not only your internal organs but also your musculoskeletal system - the network of muscles, bones, tendons, and ligaments that keeps you moving.

Here’s how diabetes can quietly impact your body:

  • Reduced blood flow can limit oxygen and nutrients to muscles and joints.
  • Collagen changes make tissues stiffer and less flexible.
  • Inflammation contributes to joint pain and stiffness.

Slower healing means minor aches can turn into chronic issues.

Common Musculoskeletal Issues in Diabetes

  • Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis): Shoulder stiffness and pain that can last months.
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Tingling, numbness, and weakness in the hands.
  • Limited Joint Mobility: Tight fingers or difficulty straightening hands.
  • Dupuytren’s Contracture: Thickened tissue in the palms causing the fingers to curl.
  • Back and Neck Pain: Postural strain and reduced flexibility due to inflammation.

These issues can significantly reduce independence and quality of life - but help is available.

How Osteopathy Can Support People with Diabetes

Osteopathy takes a holistic approach, looking at how your entire body functions together. For people with diabetes, it offers gentle, natural ways to relieve pain, improve circulation, and restore movement.

Osteopathic care can:

  • Improve joint mobility - easing stiffness and helping you move more freely.
  • Boost circulation - supporting healthy tissue and better healing.
  • Ease muscle tension and nerve pressure - reducing discomfort in areas like the back, shoulders, and wrists.
  • Encourage safe movement - helping you stay active, which also supports blood sugar control.
  • Promote balance and wellbeing - by restoring natural movement patterns and reducing fatigue.

“As both an Osteopath and a Type 1 diabetic, I’ve experienced first hand how closely diabetes and musculoskeletal health are connected.

There have been times where stiffness, fatigue, or slower recovery after activity have reminded me that diabetes affects much more than blood sugar readings.

Through living with Type 1 diabetes and supporting diabetic patients in the clinic, I’ve learned that consistent, gentle movement, body awareness and regular targeted exercise make a huge difference.

Like all Type 1 diabetics, I make many decisions each day to monitor my blood glucose, carbohydrate input, stress and activity levels all to accurately adjust my insulin replacement injections to maintain blood glucose control. However, by also paying attention to early signs of tension, stiffness, aches and pain this helps my body stay relatively flexible and resilient.

I see my Osteopath regularly to help me manage the daily aches and pains related to my posture, ever advancing years and variety of injuries picked up through my enjoyment of sport. With my Type 1 Diabetes I also need to keep a close eye on the bridge between medical management and physical wellbeing.

It’s one of the reasons I’m passionate about helping others with diabetes move better, feel better, and stay active in a way that supports their long-term health” - Gordon
