Staying Active and Healthy in the Summer Heat

There’s no denying it – this summer has certainly turned up the heat! While we all love a bit of sunshine, those lovely warm days can make staying active a little more challenging, especially when the temperatures start to climb.

At Brixworth Osteopathic Clinic, we’re big believers in keeping your body moving, but there’s no need to push yourself through the hottest part of the day. In fact, listening to your body is just as important as staying active.

Keep moving, but take it easy

When it’s hot, your usual walk, run or exercise session can feel much harder than normal. Try slowing things down and choosing gentler activities. A relaxed early-morning or evening walk can be a great way to keep moving without overheating.

If you’re exercising outdoors, look for shady routes and avoid the hottest part of the day. And remember, it’s absolutely fine to take more breaks than usual!

Stay hydrated

It sounds obvious, but it’s easy to forget to drink enough when you’re busy enjoying the summer. Keep a bottle of water nearby and sip regularly throughout the day, particularly before, during and after exercise.

If you’re feeling thirsty, tired, dizzy or headachy, take a break, find somewhere cool and have a drink.

Don’t underestimate the heat

Warm weather can make muscles feel looser and joints less stiff, which can be lovely - butit doesn’t mean your body is invincible! If you’re doing more gardening, walking, DIY or other summer activities than usual, build things up gradually. Spending a whole afternoon tackling the garden after doing very little all in winter is a recipe for a sore back!

Try changing positions regularly, take plenty of breaks and avoid lifting more than you’re comfortable with. Your future self will thank you.

Make the most of cooler parts of the day

One of the easiest ways to stay active in hot weather is simply to change when you exercise. Early mornings and later evenings are often much more comfortable. Even 20–30 minutes of gentle movement can make a difference, whether that’s walking, stretching, swimming or simply getting out and about.

And if the weather really is too much, there’s no prize for forcing yourself through it. A few quieter days won’t undo all your hard work.

Listen to your body

Perhaps the most important thing is to pay attention to how you’re feeling. If something hurts, feels unusually difficult or just doesn’t feel right, stop and give yourself a chance to recover.

Summer is a great opportunity to be active, get outdoors and enjoy yourself - but staying healthy isn’t about doing everything at full speed. Sometimes the best thing you can do for your body slows down, rest and recharge.

So, keep moving, keep drinking plenty of water, take regular breaks and enjoy the sunshine sensibly.

And if aches and pains are getting in the way of enjoying your summer, the team at Brixworth Osteopathic Clinic is always happy to help.

Stay cool and take care of yourselves!
